Acquiring tools is a lifelong process. You probably started as a teenager how to rub in butter some screwdrivers, a wrench set and a hammer—but a welder is one of the last things you add to the collection, if you ever even own one at all.
They require workshop space, money, and the specialized skills to properly weld. It's understandable if you haven't gotten to that point yet in your building and tinkering. Fortunately for all the non-welder-owning makers, YouTube celebrity mechanic Colin Furze recently released two videos that show you how to make an awesome, fast go-cart with nothing but a simple tool collection.
Now just because you don't need a full welder, you will still need some power tools to cut and shape metal—namely a drill and an angle grinder. You'll also need a particularly large 20mm metal drill bit as well as a 25mm bi-metal hole saw for creating the holes in the frame for the rear axle, but these bits can be purchased form a hardware store relatively cheaply. Everything else you need is par for the course—wrenches, allen keys, hammer, file, screw drivers—but you do want to get a set square and some clamps to make your life easier, particularly if this is your first time building something like a go-cart.
As far as parts go, you'll need a pit bike engine more power and more fun than a lawn mower enginea sprocket, an axle, a brake rotor and caliper, wheels, a steering wheel, a seat, and some other odds and ends including the electronics.

You'll need about 12 feet of 2" x 2" steel box section, some 25mm x 25mm steel angle iron, and steel flat bar and plate in various widths and thicknesses you can see exactly what Furze uses in the video.
A vise is also going to be crucial to clamp and bend the steel, so you really want to have a full workbench if you are going to take on this project. As far as constructing the frame goes, make sure you carefully measure everything twice before any cutting or drilling.
For cutting the box section, you want to mark all four sides and cut them individually for a clean, flat cut. Its also a good idea to mark and drill each side of the box section separately rather than trying to drill straight through, which could leave you with uneven holes. If this is your first big metalworking project, remember to take it slow.
You're probably going to have to return to the trusty hardware store a number of times for supplies and metal—and when something goes wrong, just remember it's all part of the fun. The front axle requires some particularly tricky cuts out of the box section to setup how to communicate with someone through your mind front wheels at the proper angle, so set aside plenty of time for yourself when working on that part.
Mounting the engine can be tricky too, and depending on what model of pit bike engine you have, you might need to fiddle with the support bars and mounting plates to get the chain and everything else to line up properly—so be patient and remember that its a process. Go karts can be fun and quite easy to make. Unlike their iron-frame counterparts, a wooden go-kart can be just as fun and exciting. By building a go-kart from wood, you eliminate the need for welding supplies, heavy metal tools and creating something that may be hard to transport.
A wooden go-kart is lightweight, flexible and easy to move around. Set three of the 2 by 4 wood planks on the table or ground and form the letter "I". This will be what you use to control the steering. Center the third eye bolt on the top board of the go-kart frame. Use the wrench to push the bolt in the center. This is where you will connect another rope or pully system to pull the go-kart forward. Attach attach a small, balanced seat to the center board and back board of the go-kart using a wrench and bolt. You are ready for hours of fun.
