But is setting and accomplishing goals really what sets these successful people apart? The first step to set and accomplish goals is to reflect on your past and present situation. While many people skip this step, it's crucial in order to determine what you wish to improve on and achieve.
Before creating a vision for your future or planning for what you want to gain, take a moment to assess your strengths, weaknesses, past learnings, past mistakes, current environment, current resources, current limiting beliefs, mindset roadblocks, actual roadblocks, etc. Doing so will equip you with more clarity, better understanding, more motivation, and a keen sense of what it would actually take to set and accomplish goals that are yours and yours alone.
Just think of all the sports organizations and companies that perform regular performance overviews and target meetings — they need to first know what worked and what didn't in order to get an idea of the next steps to take. While there are several ways to go about doing this, one method is the S. A goal needs to be painstakingly specific. The more specific your goal is, the clearer and more manageable it is to accomplish.
Take for example a person who wants to run a successful blog. Starting a blog is simple — choose a platform, set up hosting, register your domain, design the website, and publish the first article.
But then why do millions of blogs fail or are left abandoned? They're started without a specific goal in mind or any goal for that matter.
If your goal is vague, how will you know how to accomplish it? Instead of stating lofty platitudes, how to accomplish your goals incorporating answers to questions like what, who, why, where, when, how much, and how often. Goals need to be measurable so you can track your progress and evaluate your methods frequently. Use numbers, statistics, or concrete targets whenever possible.
After the first month, you can then build on the metrics and progress to higher numbers and a better quality of engagement. Goals need to be in line with your core values and priorities, and need to be relevant to you, not to society, or to your parents. By setting relevant goals, you can move towards who you want to be, where you want to be, and what you want to accomplish, instead of going off in different directions.
I suggest focusing on one main goal at a time, preferably the most important one and the one that will make you feel the most fulfilled. Deadlines such as 7 days, one month, or 90 days are extremely helpful in preventing procrastination. This means it's best to evaluate how long it would really take to accomplish a goal and routinely check yourself if you're just stalling. Once you've evaluated your goals and processes, be prepared to make revisions. It is a guide, a framework, and one of many strategies out there. It is not a perfect system nor is it an end-all and be-all answer to goal-setting. While there are many ways to do this, each of which depends on the goal you are referring to, here are additional steps you can take:. Small steps and micro-habits will guarantee your momentum and avoid procrastination. Since these are your goals, no one else can accomplish them for you so it's up to you to remain focused and disciplined.
If you think it might help, consider posting your goals on social media, sharing them with an accountability partner, or hiring a coach to help guide and support you throughout your process. Examples are to donate money to a charity you hate or doing chores you dislike for a neighbor for a whole month. Unless your goals and actions are in line and unless you execute, review, and improve on a regular basis, your goals will remain unaccomplished.
For this reason, setting and accomplishing goals require implementing systems and habits that work for you, instead of against you. If, for example, your goal is to exercise regularly in the morning, try setting aside your workout clothes beside your bed before you sleep.

Unless you decide with certainty what your goal is, you have no shot at achieving it. To choose a goal, I look at the main eight life categories of my life. The eight categories I use are:. You can set more than one goal, but this post is specifically about achieving a particular goal.
Just repeat the steps for each goal you set. This is actually de-motivating. To combat this, you need to create a plan for your goal. S pecific — your goal must be clear M easurable — you must be able to track your goal A ttainable — you must set a goal that is attainable i.
This will help you be very clear about what your goal is. Next, I actually want you to step away from the goal planning process and instead reflect on your life. Write down where you are today in that area of your life. Be detailed. If you are setting a health goal, write down how much you weigh, your measurements, how you feel about your health, etc. You need to write down why you want whatever it is that you want. Dig deep for your reason. The deeper the reason, the better. This is a really strong why.
You should have the deadline from Step 1. Go a step further and put 1 month check-ins on your calendar marking how many months left to complete the goal. Once you have your main deadline and monthly check-ins marked on your calendar, you need to create small plans to accomplish your goal. For example, if your goal is to start a profitable blog by December 31 st , then you might set the following mini goals:. These would be a few mini-goals throughout the year.
Then, break up each mini-goal into monthly and weekly goals and actions to take. The more you break up your goals and have a specific plan in place, the more likely you are to achieve your goal. Put time on your calendar to work on your goals and mini-goals on a daily basis or at least close to daily. The reason this is important is that it will help you build habits into your daily routine that get you working on your goal.
Habits are the key to success because they take the need for constant motivation out of the equation. You are much more likely to achieve your goal if you work on it every day for a little bit.
But put time slots on your calendar where you are committed to consistently working on your goals. I use the gCalendar to schedule the time slots of when I work on my goals.
I keep it in month view on my desktop, and I also sync it to my phone in an app. Start by creating a daily system where you write down your goal every. Who do you think is more likely to achieve their goals — the person who writes her goals down daily or the person who just thinks about her goal? Definitely the person who is writing it down.
And focus, above all else, is the hidden gem to actually accomplishing your goals. This is SO important. I recommend setting aside 30 minutes at the end of the week to review how your week went with your goal. Keep this as a standing appointment with yourself so that you are committed to it.
